Museums of Sonoma County is actually two museums in one location, housing both the Art Museum of Sonoma County and the History Museum of Sonoma County. This Smithsonian Affiliate is located in the historic 1910 Santa Rosa Post Office, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The History Museum has been in this landmark building since 1985, but the Art Museum of Sonoma County joined them in April of this year.
The Art Museum of Sonoma County presents national and international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The Museum’s collection features artists who have lived and worked in Northern California. With diverse education programs, the Museum serves as a creative forum and public gathering place. Their 4,500 sq. ft. gallery space, located in the former Conklin Bros. building at 505 B Street. The new museum represents Phase I of a long-term expansion plan that will transform the entire corner of downtown Santa Rosa at 5th and B Streets. See the exhibit Art in Motion through Aug. 11, followed by Tierra de Rosas: New Works by Maria de Los Angeles, Aug. 25 – Nov. 3. Concurrent with Maria de Los Angeles’s exhibition is A Way of Life, co-curated by Maria de Los Angeles and MSC Executive Director Jeff Nathanson. This exhibition celebrates the personal and artistic connections that provided support, influence, and inspiration for de Los Angeles on her path as a nationally-recognized emerging artist. Día de los Muertos will exhibit Sept. 28 – Nov. 10. Day of the Dead (Spanish, Día de los Muertos) is a joyous remembrance of the lives of family members and loved ones who have died and a celebration of the cycle of life. Presented in collaboration with Creative Sonoma, the Discovered Exhibition will feature the recipients of the 2019 Discovered Awards, and is on display November and December, 2019. November through January, 31st Annual Artistry in Wood. This annual exhibition is presented by the Sonoma County Woodworkers Association (SCWA) in partnership with the Museum of Sonoma County. Staged every year since 1982, it is recognized as one of the premier fine woodworking shows in North America.
The History Museum of Sonoma County is a regional history center for the North San Francisco Bay Area. Its exhibitions and collections document the region’s rich land and history. The Museum serves the community as a gathering place and educational forum for youth and adults. See the exhibit Grass Roots: Cannabis from Prohibition to Prescription continues through Sept. 15. Private Curator Tours and Private Docent-Led tours are also available. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
