Have you ever pictured yourself on the Serengeti, traveling by jeep in the open air, being able to observe African wildlife at close range? Now, you don’t have to be transported to another continent to have the experience – you can go on a safari in Sonoma County!

Nestled between Napa and Sonoma, Safari West is an authentic African wildlife preserve and luxury tent camp—home to over 900 exotic, endangered and extinct-in-the-wild African mammals and birds. With their deluxe safari tent camp and on-site dining, they have everything you need for an inspiring holiday, whether visiting for the day or overnight. Guests may explore the Sonoma Serengeti on an African wildlife safari led by trained naturalists, or relax in a luxury tent under the gaze of a graceful giraffe…the most unique adventure in wine country. It’s the ultimate in Glamping!

Adventure abounds as you set out in a rugged, open air safari vehicle in search of zebra, blue wildebeest, springbok, Cape buffalo, Watusi cattle, kudu and more! Crossing terrain that ranges from steep and rocky to rolling savanna, the journey transports you to an environment much like the exotic and untamed lands of Africa, with our herds roaming virtually undisturbed over hundreds of acres. And, with a little luck, you might find yourself eye-to-eye with a towering, curious giraffe!

The on-site restaurant, the Savannah Cafe features chic dining and delicious safari ranch style barbecue meals prepared by their chef on a giant African fire pit called a boma, fueled by hardwood. They offer local wines featuring Sonoma and Napa Counties, selected South African wines, plus local featured brews and selected South African beers.

For a more intense experience, spend a night or two in a luxury safari tent. Guests should absolutely spend the night for a more complete experience. There is nothing more magical than falling asleep to the sounds of a kookaburra and waking to the resounding love-songs of the sarus cranes.  Overnight stays give busy families the rare opportunity to form meaningful connections with each other and the environment in which we live.  The only distraction is the majestic beauty of the natural world and it’s most exotic inhabitants!

A favorite private tour is the Brews and Buffalo Safari, a guided tour and beer tasting safari. This safari features a sampling of Sonoma County’s finest brewed ales and lagers and savory snacks. Another popular tour especially for the wine enthusiast is the Winos and Rhinos Safari, a unique wine and adventure package. Guests can pile into the safari vehicle and pretend they’re exploring the wilds of Kenya. No one’s going to tell them otherwise – especially not the animals.

Safari West is located at 3115 Porter Creek Road in Santa Rosa. Prior reservations are required for tours, meals and lodging, and may be made through their website, or by calling (800) 616-2695 or (707) 579-2551. • safariwest.com
