Sonoma County Fire Relief Beer Event @ Sonoma County Fairgrounds
Apr 7 @ 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

The Sonoma County Fire Relief Beer Event, brought to you by Battle of the Brews in conjunction with the Active 20-30 Clubof Santa Rosa #50, was envisioned following the devastating wildfires that ravaged Sonoma County in October 2017.

In partnership with Sonoma County’s three major beer distributors: Columbia Distributing, Eagle Distributing and Morris Distributing, the groups came together to see how they could partner to bring a one-of-a-kind experience celebrating Sonoma County and all things craft beer, while benefitting those affected by the Sonoma County wildfires.

The result, the Sonoma County Fire Relief Beer Event, will build upon the tradition of Battle of the Brews, Sonoma County’s Premier Craft Beer Event™, by incorporating elements of the VIP Craft Cup Competition, a BJCP-Certified Commercial Beer Competition (beers will also be on tap to sample by Craft Cup attendees) featuring special edition, limited release and popular craft brews, with the People’s Choice Main Event, an affordable beer tasting alternative featuring dozens of craft brew tasting opportunities. And with increased demand, the Sonoma County Fire Relief Beer Event will take this one-time event to new heights, with the event to be held beyond the walls of the Grace Pavilion, all within the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

This year’s event proceeds will be distributed to groups and organizations that are assisting survivors of last year’s Sonoma County wildfires, with a youth focus in mind. The Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa #50 is collaborating with Columbia Distributing, Eagle Distributing and Morris Distributing to designate beneficiaries for this year’s event.

At this time, these groups have preliminarily identified the following organizations as a few of what we expect to be several beneficiaries of the Sonoma County Fire Relief Beer Event:

  • Redwood Empire Food Bank
  • Committee on the Shelterless (COTS)
  • Sonoma County YMCA
  • Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa #50 (funds will be disbursed by the club to local non-profit or charitable organizations that are providing assistance or services to youth affected by the fires). While event proceeds will be allocated after the event, the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa #50 has already invested funds to help fire survivors by providing:
    • $5,000 to Shoes 4 Kidz, which helped the organization buy $5,000 worth of new shoes for children whose homes were destroyed in the fires
    • Volunteers of the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa #50 came together to assemble bicycles, which were then given away to fire survivors whose homes were destroyed in the fires

We welcome any suggestions you may have for additional beneficiaries of our event. Please contact us if you’d like to recommend an organization or non-profit for us to consider as a beneficiary.

Pliny The Younger Release @ Russian River Brewing Company
Feb 1 – Feb 14 all-day

Pliny the Younger will make his 15th Annual return to Russian River Brewing Company February 1st through February 14th, 2019! For the first time Younger will be available at our new Windsor brewery as well as the original Downtown Santa Rosa location!  It will be available on draft each day at our brewpubs until we run out of that day’s allocation. Younger is neither bottled nor available in growlers so more people will have the opportunity to enjoy it right from the source, or at a handful of select draft accounts.

Pliny the Younger is considered a “triple” IPA, simply meaning that it is higher in alcohol and has tons of hops. The alcohol should finish at about 10.25%, although it is remarkably dry for the amount of malt used in the recipe. It is loaded with hop flavors, bitterness, and aromatics. The hops used in this year’s recipe are of excellent quality from the 2018 harvest: Warrior, Amarillo, Simcoe, Centennial, CTZ, Chinook, Crystal, and Citra.  We brewed Younger for the first time in 2005 as a winter seasonal, building upon the Pliny the Elder recipe while pushing the envelope with malt, hops, and alcohol just to see how far we could go! It is always brewed only once a year and released the first Friday in February, rain or shine.

Pliny the Younger was the nephew and adopted son of Pliny the Elder. He was a lawyer and an author in Ancient Rome and witnessed the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, which took the life of his uncle. Pliny the Younger lived from 61 AD to 112 AD. He wrote many letters which survive today and have great historical value. We thought it appropriate to also pay tribute to Pliny the Elder’s nephew by naming this special beer after him!

THIS JUST IN: The Town of Windsor is providing a FREE shuttle from the Airport Blvd. train stop to our Windsor location as well as other breweries, bars, restaurants and local hotels every day during the release and hopefully beyond!  More info coming soon!
